Search to Begin for New President/CEO of The United Methodist Publishing House
NASHVILLE, TN (October 29, 2014) – Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, the Board of Directors of The United Methodist Publishing House voted unanimously to launch the search for the next President/CEO of the UMC’s publishing and retail ministry early in 2015.
In announcing plans for a national search board chairperson, Dr. R. Carl Frazier, Jr. said:
“Given the dramatic rate and nature of change in the church and culture which are altering both the markets and roles for its publishing/retail ministry, the leadership of UMPH must simultaneously navigate and sustain current programs and urgently invent new products and services for new customers. “
After a year-long strategic review and planning process, a special board committee drafted the proposal to divide the duties currently assigned to the President & Publisher, providing for both a President/CEO and for the separate position of Publisher. The Publisher will be accountable to the President/CEO and elected by the board of directors.
The President/CEO will be charged with leading a highly adaptive, financially self-sustaining enterprise that must navigate dramatic changes and evolutions in the church, culture, and publishing and distribution industries.
After the new President/CEO is elected and installed, a search will commence for the next Publisher who will be responsible for oversight of the UMC’s publishing ministry by acquiring, curating, developing, and delivering high quality, relevant content that supports and extends the UMC’s mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
The board is seeking to find, recruit, and elect two collaborative leaders who will shape the publishing house’s strategy with active learning and innovation through constant experimentation.
The board began its review and planning for leadership transition after the current President and Publisher, Neil Alexander, announced in 2013 his plans to retire soon after the 2016 session of General Conference, the quadrennial legislative event for The United Methodist Church. Alexander will have completed more than 20 years as the President & Publisher and 28 years of work with UMPH when his tenure ends.
The United Methodist Publishing House is a publisher and distributor to Christian clergy and laity, with primary responsibilities for the publishing and distribution for The United Methodist Church. The Publishing House is a fully self-supporting agency and receives no general church funds.
